Below is a location map of the most popular canoeing routes.
The Papal route, the Czarna Hancza river, has its source at Polands deepest lake, this route is the only one that has been endorsed by the Vatican. When the Pope was a young lad, he used to paddle down this river. It is approximately 80 kms long and it meanders through Polands largest forest complex. You may come across several obstacles such as trees blocking the river but as a whole it is suitable for beginners, there are numerous camp sites and hostels. The river eventually joins the Augustow canal and you can paddle all the way into the centre of town. No need to carry the canoe, that is unless you do not wish to paddle through locks. Duration of trip for the whole river can last up to five days or you may wish to go for a day trip. click here for map
The Queen of Polish rivers, the river Biebrza ( Old translation, beaver river) This river flows for about 150kms through the Biebrza national park. It is a slow meandering river flowing mainly through meadows, during the summer it can get clogged up with weed but it is ideal for those who wish to test themselves on a longer paddle and you will be guaranteed of a sighting of an aquatic warbler and crane. There are campsites but not many and hostels start appearing at the lower stretches, this area is known as the Polish Amazon and for good reason. It must be remembered that where there are plenty of insects, there will also be plenty of birds. It is highly unlikely that you will come across any obstacles and therefore beginners may find this an attractive route. This trip can last up to 10 days, but short stretches can also be paddled. click here for map
The Augustow heritage canal, a canal older than both the Panama and Suez and yet little known on the international scene. This waterway provided transportation for goods to the Baltic and now flows through two countries and soon you will be able to paddle from Augustow to Belarus. Restoration works on the border locks has nearly been completed and this will become one of Europe's most interesting and exciting navigation routes. This canal flows through countryside and is more in character with a river than an industrial waterway. You will come across locks situated in the most attractive places. The length in Poland is about 100 kms Nowadays the canal is used only for recreational purposes. The canal also flows through specially designated areas which have been given nature protection priority under the Nature 2000 programme. It is ideal for day trips and a great route for beginners. click here for map
The Celtic route, this route takes you along the soon to be famous rospuda river valley, in the vicinity of this river, there is a village called Scotland, a remnant of Scottish settlers who were invited by the local lord, to improve agricultural techniques. This river at times can be very shallow although at times there can be a current. There are very few facilities on this route. It will also take you back to the centre of Augustow. Distance to be traveled is about 75 kms and it will take about 4-5days. Please note that you will encounter several obstacles and therefore I would not recommend this route for beginners. In this case you will also be paddling through Nature 2000 territory. click here for map
